Recognizing that our friends and neighbors in Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs have played a huge part in the success of Flax Dental, Dr. Hugh Flax and his team do what they can to “give back.” As a caring dentist near Sandy Springs, GA, these involvements help serve Dr. Flax’s community in many ways.
AACD Humanitarian Award
- Losing your home
- Losing your office and future income
- Losing some of your family and friends
- Losing the culture you grew up with
A humanitarian is someone who not only gives of himself to help those in need, but in doing so, also stimulates others to be generous and caring. Two years ago, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast (and Dr. Flax’s former hometown of New Orleans), hundreds of dental colleagues, many friends and their families, had their lives ripped apart. Dr. Flax tirelessly organized the AACD Disaster Relief Fund and has raised almost $100,000 to help them and others affected by future disasters.
On May 20th, Dr. Flax received the AACD Humanitarian of the Year Award to honor those efforts. The statuette is an elegant symbol of his dedication to building camaraderie and compassion not only in the AACD but throughout the world.
Wounded Warrior Project
Flax Dental has made contributions to the local Wounded Warrior Project. Dr. Flax is honored to contribute to WWP’s success and he looks forward to continuing the partnership with WWP in the future.
Camp Twin Lakes – Positive life-changing experiences
Every Christmas, in the spirit of giving, Flax Dental makes a donation on behalf of their dental partners to Camp Twin Lakes. The camp is a not-for-profit organization that provides life-changing experiences for children facing serious illnesses and other physical and emotional challenges at its 500-acre facility in Rutledge, Georgia, and other locations throughout the state.
Give Back A Smile – Restore a smile. Restore a life.
The Give Back A Smile program, an initiative of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists (AACD), is dedicated to providing cosmetic dental care at no cost to all survivors of domestic violence.
Dr. Hugh Flax, former President of the AACD, and the Flax Dental team are active participants of the program. “The Give Back A Smile program helps survivors recapture the confidence that has been lost from being in stressful and damaging relationships,” says Hugh Flax. Give Back A Smile is celebrating 10 years of service and to date has provided more than $5 million dollars in cosmetic dentistry and basic dental care to survivors.
Candy Buy Back – Supporting our troops
Last October, for the second year, Flax Dental participated in the Halloween Candy Buy Back program. Candy Buy Back invites young patients and neighborhood children to bring in their Halloween candy to participating cosmetic dentist offices where they will be paid $1 per pound. The candy is then sent to the troops overseas to sweeten their day!
Flax Dental amassed over 100 pounds of candy – four times the amount collected the year before!
Oral Cancer Awareness Event
Last year we got a jump start on April’s Oral Cancer Awareness Month by hosting an educational and Velscope screening at not cost to our friends and neighbors in our building.Everyone learned about the increasing frequency of cases and risk factors that affect people of all ages. Furthermore we were blessed to have oral cancer survivor Eric Ashman share his experiences as a patient, as well as, how it altered the lives of those he met and their families.
Bottom line: Please get a regular screening before it’s too late and be on the lookout for more Oral Cancer Awareness events in the future!
One Warm Coat
Adults and children cannot work and learn effectively when their body temperature drops. Something as simple as a warm coat can make all the difference to help our community live healthily and happily.
In December 2013, Dr. Hugh Flax hosted a coat drive by partnering with One Warm Coat. One Warm Coat is an organization that provides coats to anyone in need. They have partnered with thousands of organizations in North America, donating more than 4 million coats so far.
Thanks to the wonderful participation from our patients, we were able to donate 35 coats!
22 for the 22 Event
Flax Dental is a proud participant and sponsor of 22 for the 22 Atlanta event that took place on November 14th 2015.
Each day 22 United States Veterans commit suicide. Each day another 58 veterans attempt suicide. It’s an epidemic that we can’t ignore. “22 with 22 for the 22” is walk to raise awareness and funds for the 22 Veterans who commit suicide every day. We walked 22 kilometers starting at Meehan’s in Sandy Springs and finished at Meehan’s Atlantic Station.
