I freak out at the sound of my dentist’s drill!
- Posted on: Aug 7 2014
I am a total dental chicken! I hate everything about the dentist, probably due to a painful experience from when I was young. But what puts me over the top and keeps me laying awake at night is thinking about the sound of the drill. Is there any hope for me? I want to set a good example for my kids but can’t even go there because of my anxiety. I have been putting off taking them in because I don’t want them to have issues like me.

If it makes you feel any better, there are millions of people that deal with some degree of dental anxiety or fear. It is understandable that you don’t want to pass that same mindset onto your children. But avoiding the dentist will just set them up for failure. The more positive (pain-free) dental appointments that they have while they are young will help set the tone for positive dental experiences as they get older.
First things first, you need to deal with your dental fear. Have you ever looked for a drill-free dentist? There is actually a new type of highly sophisticated laser out called the Solea laser. Using this technique, a dentist can eliminate the vibration and noise that occurs when a drill is used. In some cases, there is no Novocain required.
The Solea laser will enable the dentist to fix cavities and even prepare teeth for crowns without the drill. You may have heard of other lasers that are effective on soft tissues, but this new Solea laser is the most advanced laser out on the market and can be used to treat teeth too.
If you are still feeling apprehensive, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry. With oral sedation, you will be completely relaxed and indifferent to what is going on during the appointment. It simply involves taking a pill before your appointment. Many patients report that they remember very little if anything about the visit. It is completely safe and has helped many deal with dental fear.
This new Solea laser sounds like it could be an excellent solution for your issues of the drill. Hopefully after you can get a few painless, noise-free appointments under your belt, you can set a better example for your children.
