Is a man or woman the best cosmetic dentist?
- Posted on: Aug 5 2015
I have been thinking about getting a smile makeover with porcelain veneers. But I am just getting ready to move again. So I was wondering if men or women make the best cosmetic dentist? Does gender matter when I am interested in more aesthetic work versus general dentistry?

That is an interesting question. To avoid an all out battle of the sexes, there really is no right or wrong answer. There are studies that show female dentists may be more empathetic and help to keep patients calm. Basically they have a more welcoming chair-side manner. This is likely due to women being the more nurturing, compassionate gender. Although, this preference certainly cannot correlate that women are the best cosmetic dentists.
Cosmetic dentistry is an art. So if you are looking into porcelain veneers, you need to do your research in selecting the best dentist for you. Look at their accreditation, credentials, and ask to see a portfolio of their work. The thing is, cosmetic dentistry is not a designated specialty area within dentistry. So anyone (man or woman) can make the claim to do porcelain veneers. It doesn’t mean that they have any training or expertise in cosmetic dentistry though.
The best thing to do is interview several cosmetic dentists in your area. Ask to see cases similar to yours and meet with them personally. Many excellent cosmetic dentists will provide some sort of complimentary consultation. This short meeting will allow you to get a feel for their style, what drives their passion, and ultimately help you decide if you want to move forward with treatment.
Thank you for your question.
