Looking for a dentist that uses a laser.

I have heard a laser drill is the latest new thing and it is supposed to be less painful. Do you know if it works to have a deep cavity filled.

Paul,

You are correct that laser dentistry is a recent technology that many dentists are beginning to incorporate into their practices. But when you refer to it as a “laser drill” that is inaccurate.

Laser dentistry eliminates the need for a drill. Fearful or anxious patients love no drill dentistry because the pain, heat, and annoying sound is not an issue.

Lasers can be used for many kinds of hard and soft tissue treatments. In your case, laser dentistry would work well to remove the decay before the cavity was filled or prepare the tooth for a crown. It can also be used for soft tissue treatments, like periodontal treatments, oral surgery, or extractions.

The best way to go about finding a laser dentist in your area would be to search for a “laser dentist” or “no drill” dentist in your town. Many times there isn’t any need for an anesthetic either.

The latest highly sophisticated laser on the market is the Solea laser which uses carbon dioxide. It is safe and has been cleared by the FDA. So a dentist that offers the Solea laser would be at the leading edge of laser dentistry and the advances in the field.
