When it comes to missing teeth, you have options

dental implants atlanta | missing teeth atlanta gaEven with all the techniques that dentists have to repair our teeth, many of us will still lose one or more teeth in our lifetimes, usually due to:

  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Injuries

And for most of us, living with a missing tooth isn’t a long-term option as it can make chewing and speaking difficult. Equally important, a missing tooth can affect our self-esteem and sense of wellbeing. But your dentist does have several options for tooth replacement that can meet your appearance needs and provide normal function:

Dental implants

Composed of a titanium screw or post inserted into your jaw and then covered with a dental crown, dental implants are a long-term option for a missing tooth or multiple teeth. Dental implants don’t affect adjacent teeth or need them for support, and implants look and feel like natural teeth.

  • You must be in good overall health
  • Your jawbone must be able to hold the implant
  • Your gums should be healthy

Dental bridge

Also called a fixed partial denture, a dental bridge can replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between a missing tooth and the surrounding teeth. The bridge is bonded onto the adjacent teeth, which will need to be crowned. Dental bridges can also be removable or implanted. A dental bridge can fill in for missing teeth and serve the same purpose of natural teeth:

  • Maintain the shape of the face
  • Maintain bite integrity
  • Allow normal chewing, speaking and smiling

For our patients who have lost all or most of their teeth, dentures can be the best tooth replacement option. You may need complete upper and lower dentures or only overdentures, which are removable and can be used if you still have remaining natural teeth or dental implants to provide support.

  • Help maintain facial shape
  • Help restore normal chewing and speaking with time
  • Give you back your smile
