Will porcelain veneers fix my jack-o-lantern smile?

I hate my jack-o-lantern smile and honestly thought it was something I just had to learn to live with. It really sucks too, because in my line of work as a waitress, I think my tips suffer because of my teeth. I have a small chip and gaps. I really didn’t know about cosmetic dentistry until recently. That was probably because my family was never able to afford it. But my roommate was telling me about Lumineers and porcelain veneers. Do you think that would help someone like me? Halloween is probably the only time of year my smile fits in. LOL!

Becca,

The good news is that cosmetic dentistry can turn your jack-o-lantern smile into a drop-dead gorgeous Hollywood smile. You don’t have to live with gaps forever.

Lumineers are a particular brand of porcelain veneers. They are actually a brand that doesn’t require any tooth preparation. This means that they can be applied directly to the tooth without any removal of the enamel. But the truth is, many expert cosmetic dentists don’t like Lumineers. In order to close a gap, which is known as a diastema, traditional porcelain veneers are most likely the recommended treatment.  When porcelain veneers area done by an expert cosmetic dentist, they will blend in so beautifully and naturally that they will be undetectable. No one will know you have had any work done. Sometimes Lumineers patients complain of the their teeth looking bulky or longer than normal.

So yes, porcelain veneers will give you the smile you probably never knew you could have. But be sure to seek the talents of a reputable, experienced cosmetic dentist. To do beautiful work requires extensive training beyond dental school. Just because a dentist offers porcelain veneers, doesn’t mean it will be done well.
