What is Teeth Whitening?
According to a recent survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a beautiful smile is a valuable social asset. It not only improves the way you look, it can increase your self esteem and self confidence. This is why lightening the color of your teeth with teeth whitening from Atlanta based Dentist Dr. Hugh Flax, is one of the most conservative and simple ways to brighten your smile. At Flax Dental, we offer two different ways to whiten teeth—at-home teeth whitening or in-office Zoom whitening.
Professional Teeth Whitening vs. Over-the-counter Whitening
Sometimes we have patients come in that are a bit skeptical about professional teeth whitening due to their experiences with over-the-counter whitening toothpastes and products. If you have tried these drugstore products, it’s quite possible that you were left unsatisfied. The professional whitening agents used in a dentist’s office are not only much stronger, but they remain on the teeth much longer. This combination enables the peroxide bleaching agent to deeply penetrate into the teeth. The end result—years of deeply embedded stains oxidized away. If you continue to bleach, you can even lighten the natural pigmentation of your teeth.
How can I prepare for the Teeth Whitening treatment?
For the bleaching to be most effective, you need to start with teeth that have been cleaned. You also need a current examination to make sure there are no cracked or missing fillings or other issues that could cause sensitivity to the whitening gel.
The Teeth Whitening process
If you don’t have any immediate issues that need to be addressed, an impression of your teeth will be taken. The impression is what the whitening trays will be made from to ensure they fit snugly over your teeth. You can see an example of what the take home whitening trays look like in the image.
During your Teeth Whitening consultation
Dr. Flax will provide you with individualized instructions about the length of time and duration that you should wear the trays. Also, you will take home the powerful peroxide bleaching gel that you will use with the trays.
What is the Peroxide Bleaching Gel?
We use the Pola advanced tooth whitening system by Southern Dental Industries. The peroxide in the gel deeply penetrates the teeth and releases oxygen to permanently remove stains from your teeth.
How long will my teeth stay white after treatment?
It is important to realize that your teeth may continue to pick up stains from wine, berries, coffee, and other foods as time passes, but they will always be whiter than they would have been. To take care of new stains that accumulate, simply reuse the trays and get some additional whitening gel from our office as needed to touch up your smile.
Zoom In-Office Teeth Whitening
For our in-office teeth whitening, we use Zoom! This method works well for individuals looking for a dazzling, white smile in only one office visit.
