Flax Dental Scholarships
Why My Teacher Makes Me Smile
At Flax Dental, we believe knowledge matters, which is why Flax Dental invests in the next generation of students through scholarships. Dr. Hugh Flax, an Atlanta-based accredited cosmetic dentist, has dedicated his career to advancing the profession of dentistry and the care that patients receive by serving as an international lecturer, past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), and founder of the Georgia Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
His passion for education has inspired him to offer several scholarships, including the “Why My Teacher Makes Me Smile Flax Scholarship.” The “Why My Teacher Makes Me Smile Flax Scholarship” awards an annual $1,000 scholarship to be used for college tuition by a senior high school student in Georgia.

Flax Dental offers a $1,700 scholarship through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) Apex scholarship program, which sends select students to AACD’s renowned Annual Scientific Session to learn from the cosmetic dental world’s finest educators. Flax Dental also offers dental scholarships through the Knowledge Matters Flax Dental Scholarship Program. The Knowledge Matters Flax Dental Scholarship Program awards a $1,000 scholarship each year to a student pursuing a dental assistant program or dental hygiene program at a college or university in Georgia. Eligible students can write a 400-600 word essay on “Why Pursuing a Career in Dentistry is Important to You” in order to apply.
This is the third year Dr. Hugh Flax has offered the Knowledge Matters Scholarship. An Atlanta-based accredited cosmetic dentist, Dr. Flax is a dedicated supporter of education and youth. He has personally funded and created multiple scholarships and participates annually in a variety of charitable programs that benefit both local and national causes such as Smiles for Life and One Warm Coat.
“I’ve always believed in finding ways to give back. If you care about something you should find ways to be part of helping it grow and succeed,” Dr. Flax said. “Offering our scholarships is work and a sacrifice, but we love hearing from students and supporting their success. Practices are only as good as the people in them and the skills and compassion they bring to their work.”
2018 Knowledge Matters Scholarship Winner
Flax Dental is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Knowledge Matters Flax Dental Scholarship! After reviewing 67 applications and essays from students across the state of Georgia, the Flax Dental team picked Payton Lee, a dental hygiene student from West Georgia Technical College slated to graduate in 2019.
Lee’s interest in the dental field began while she was working as a private caregiver for senior citizens. She realized how much she enjoyed working with her patients and helping them live healthier lives. She also witnessed how many senior citizens suffer from dental problems due to poor dental hygiene habits. Lee found that many care programs focused exclusively on hair and bathing, but excluded dental health, a reality she hopes to change.
“After graduating from dental hygiene school, it is my goal to develop an elderly outreach program that provides dental services to those in assisted living homes, nursing homes, and possibly even those still living in their own residence,” she wrote. “Dental health should also be assessed on a regular basis because too often it is pushed to the side in the elderly population.”
2017 Knowledge Matters Scholarship Winner
Ivonne Ratkovic was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, which will support her studies at West Georgia Technical College. Ratkovic is pursuing a two-year degree in dental hygiene. “Dentistry is much more than just a career path for me,” said Ratkovic in her application. “It is the opportunity to educate others on the importance of preventable means towards oral health. I want to raise awareness of everyday dental care options, as oral health starts at home.”Read the article Flax Dental Gives Back
